You, hey close your open eyes
cover up your ears inside
the silent signs
of darkness will arise
and you will start to hear
breathing in your own free air
and hear the pulsing pounding in your heart
And if you’ve caught yourself
Won’t you let it go now

Run and see
the world is way too big to hesitate
Hold it tight
your life is way too short to waste away
Tears will fall
but dreams and love are waiting where they drop
You will find
A wider world is waiting here for you

Hey, don’t turn the other way
cover up your lonely pain
The hurt you feel
Don’t lock it in your heart
And if it hurts your eyes
And if it tries your mind
And if you find you’re losing all control
The wind will blow it through
Won’t you let it go now

Here and gone
And all that we receive will pass away
Come and go
And all we are made of is made this way
Let it out
Something held inside may be breaking through
Scream it out
You can scream it out cause you’re beautiful

Morning sun is in your brown eyes
water glimmering spring grasses, green fields
Flowers bloom and scatter round you
night bird calling clear waking the moonlight

Tears will rise
and fall into the pain of a caring heart
Sadness hurts
so turn yourself and look up to the stars
Close your eyes
tonight the light is blinding in the dark
You will see
us walk into the breaking dawn of day

“Nobu/Neko version” refers to the fact that Nobuhiko Nakayama was in charge of programming and Neko Saitou was the conductor, violinist, and in charge of the string arrangement.

What are you afraid of
You say that you feel so
feel so alive
That’s a good thing, no?
What are you afraid of
They’ve gotten so real
Those things that you feel
But progress is good, no?

What is it you’re doubting
You know I just found you
Here suddenly
That’s a good thing, no?
What is it you’re doubting
You’re asking me if you
can love me more
But onward we move up

Don’t think I don’t know that time had come to rest
All of last night, the world was just us
Block by block the rain had let up,
the city stopped and seemed to die
And so right then it was like we’d done the same
feeling like ghosts, like death had no end
drifting slow we can’t go back now it felt so good
But we were young too young

I’ve got to find somewhere
No pocket of air can
Hide you away
They never did exist
Wherever I fly to
I know that the perfect
Nest is a lie
However we move up

Don’t think I don’t know no weather could upset
All of last night, this world was a nest
None of us were starving but we
Just turned our hearts to you and I
Oh why then there could we not have stopped to think
something gained is another thing lost
stopped our hearts and stopped our lives from all drifting off
’cause we were young too young

It’s why I mutter my mind
I don’t know how to hide you
And you do it all the time
Why won’t time stand still

I know I know it when you feel that your life
Fires too fast the sounds are too bright
colors loud it’s like a sign that it’s dangerous but we were young
I think you should know I’m floating all alone
drifting, wondering when you’ll come back home
but oh we just can’t come apart ’cause when we met
then we were young too young

Notes: In Japan, each license plate number on a car is a combination of one hiragana character and a 4-digit number (for example, さ12-34). Rental cars always have the character わ (wa) in their numbers. In the title of this song, 走れゎナンバー, Ringo chose to write it with the わ (wa) being a small size (ゎ vs. わ) to indicate that it refers to this rental car license plate naming system, where the hiragana characters are always small. Essentially, this title means “Go, Rental Car.”

Notes: The word “DIAM.” appears twice in the song, both times read as “diamond.” I’m not entirely positive what it means the first time, but the second, when it’s appearing after talk of command keys, it’s referring to an execution sequence using an Apple keyboard (Ringo uses Macs to produce music). ⌘ is the symbol on the command key of Mac keyboards, and hitting ⌘(command)251 executes a chord sequence of Dm7->G7->Cm7. “Dm” (D minor) looks a bit like “DIAM./diamond” so I assume that’s the reference here. Also, that chord sequence plays as she sings that line. Similarly, for ⌘+2, that means the chord sequence is going up two places, which is also reflected in the music.

Song info: 2014 NHK soccer theme song.
Notes: Both “Nihon” and “Nippon” are readings of 日本 and mean Japan, but “Nippon” is the more patriotic (less common) pronunciation. The blue mentions in the lyrics refer to the color of Team Japan’s uniforms.

Song info: Theme song for the Fuji TV drama “Kamo, Kyoto e Iku. ~Shinise Ryokan no Okami Nikki~ [Kamo, to Kyoto. ~Diary of a Proprietess at a Long-standing Inn~]”
Info: This song’s title is the first line of a famous Heian-era Japanese poem and refers to flowers, which are brightly colored, sweet smelling, but temporary. It contains every syllable in the Japanese syllabary once, so this first line also doubles as an ordering system; “Iroha” has the same meaning as “the basics” or “the ABC’s of” something. While the characters directly transliterated read “Irohanihoheto,” the modern pronunciation is “Iro wa Nioedo.”

carnation

Song info: Theme song for the NHK TV drama “Carnation” (about a woman who is also a mother of three; a carnation is a traditional gift to mothers in Japan).
Liner notes (Ringo’s “point worthy of note” written for the drama’s website): Carnations are in the caryophyllaceae*. Doesn’t that title call to mind those women who showed us their radiant gallant figures this summer? It’s a flower that symbolizes the pride of the women of Japan, the most single-minded in the world.
Now, the mothers in the hominidae are endowed with excellent automatic functions that express the idea of “Any child is my child.” It’s an unconditional ability to try to keep precious life in good health. We don’t expect that function to have had an original name, but in the space between nature and civilization, can’t it be considered that we’ve come to call it “love”? This past March, at the unstoppable loss of so much life, we women in every place in the world shed large tears. I think that those were the crystallization of the “love” we couldn’t show.
Sadness and joy that go back and forth only between those given life and made to live. That’s all in this screenplay by Aya Watanabe-sensei, without any whitewashing. It’s a work so real that even a certain cruelty can be felt. I also had the sense that it will grapple with you unarmed and unashamed. I hope this song will fit into the drama. And that it will be a song that gently nestles close to all the viewers.
